of the Crime Writers' Association, informing Macdonald that his novel, The Far Side of the Dollar, has been selected for an
award; 1 autograph letter signed, March 30, 1971, from Macdonald to Los Angeles Times literary editor Robert Kirsch thanking
him for a review; and 1 autograph letter signed, May 12, 1971, from Macdonald to attorney Robert L. Sewell discussing F. Scott
Fitzgerald and a forthcoming trip to New York); 2 unpublished autobiographical sketches (1 essay, ca. 1966, written for an
apparently unpublished volume titled "Midcentury Authors," that discusses his early life, focusing on the effect his parents'
separation had on his childhood; 1 essay titled "Beginnings," ca. 1977, that presents Macdonald's reflections on his early
career as a writer and discusses his first 3 novels); screenplay written by Douglas Heyes (Final draft, Feb. 4, 1974; 117
pages) for the Paramount television movie, The Underground Man, based on Macdonald's novel of the same name; 2 color lobby
cards for the 1975 Warner Bros. film, The Drowning Pool; 13 black-and-white photographic stills (8 x 10 in.) from The Drowning

Ross Macdonald was the main pseudonym used by the American-Canadian crime fiction writer Kenneth Millar (December 13, 1915-July
11, 1983). He is best known for his series of hard-boiled novels set in Southern California featuring private detective Lew
Archer. In 1974, he was named a Grand Master by Mystery Writers of America. Macdonald is widely considered to be the third
in the "holy trinity" of literary crime novelists, together with Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler.
